3 Tips To Pass the National Home Inspector Exam

Sep 25, 2022

First of all....What is the NHIE?

The National Home Inspectors Examination is a test created by the Exam Board of Professional Home Inspectors, a non-profit organization based in Illinois. (You can check out their website here.)

It's a difficult test that requires alot of study and preparation.

According to the NHIE, 55% of people fail on their first attempt.

After passsing the exam, and helping several of my students pass, here are 5 tips I recommend:

  1. Read

There are 2 textbooks that NHIE provides for you to study.

They are available in physical format as well as e-book.

There is no way around it! I know you think you're super smart and you can skim the books, watch some YouTube videos, and pass…

You are mistaken.. you must READ!

  1. Take Notes

"Studying " is not just reading.

Effective study requires you to interact with the material, for example, taking notes.

I created a Note Taking template specifically for HI preparing top the NHIE. Check it out for FREE

  1.

Learning how to be a HI covers alot

of material and for many of you, the info will be unfamiliar. In order to learn and retain this info, its going to take consistent studying on your part. In my journey as an entrepreneur. I've leaned the power of a schedule and not "finding" time, but MAKING time for what's important to me.No matter what your schedule consists of, it's a good idea to create a routine that includes time for you to study/Review your material DAILY. You should plan to spend about 90 min in your material studying everyday. It's going to take every bit of that to prepare you for your new caReeR.

  1. Find What You Read

Especially if you are new to this field, you need to gain a practical understanding of the material. So once you read and take notes on a component, go find it. For ex: in ch S of the- book the Plumbing sys is covered. Once you read about the diff types of plumbing pipes, go identify them in your house or another hack is to take a field trip to Home Depot

so you can see/touch what you're learning about.

5 Become A Teacher!

Studies show that one of the best ways to learn and commit material to memory is by teaching it. After you finish reading and taking notes on a chapter, find a friend or fam member to teach what you learned.
